Professor of Ethnopharmacology (Pharmacognosy) at the UCL School of Pharmacy and currently the co-chair of UCL’s Research Ethics Committee. Since August 2022, I have been a Yushan Fellow, at China Medical University, Taichung, Taiwan (https://yushan.project.edu.tw/TopTalent/EN/Intro#section1). Until 2017 I was the head of the research cluster ‘Biodiversity and Medicines’ at the UCL School of Pharmacy and previously head of the Centre for Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy, School of Pharmacy, Univ. London. In 2011 I acted as the founding director of Southern Cross Plant Science (Southern Cross Univ.), Australia.
I obtained an ‘MSc’ in Biology and Dr. rer nat. from the Univ. Freiburg, Germany as well as a MA in Anthropology from Wayne State University, USA both with a focus on Mexican ethnopharmacology.
My group's research is based on a transdisciplinary perspective integrating approaches from the natural and social sciences with an overall aim of tackling the fast changing global health needs focusing on the use of plant derived products as ‘medicinal plants’, ‘health foods’ or nutraceuticals, botanicals and the like. It integrates methodological approaches from ethnopharmacology, Plant sciences, natural product research, public health research, and anthropology.
For many years the research centered around understanding the chemical complexity of (medicinal and food) plants and how this is linked to uses and pharmacology. More recently my group’s research has centered on value chains of herbal medicines in a globalized context (incl. their impacts on livelihood and quality of products) and on the use of herbal medicines in the management of chronic diseases. A key focus throughout my career has been the focus on a sustainable and equitable use of resources also in the wider context of societal and economic needs
I am, among other responsibilities, Specialty Editor in Chief of Frontiers in Pharmacology, Ethnopharmacology, and until 2020 as well as Reviews Editor of the Journal of Ethnopharmacology. Well over 450 full papers (incl. reviews) have been published so far and our work is highly cited. In 2023 I was awarded the Norman Farnsworth Award in Botanical Excellence (ABC, Austin, Texas) I am fluent in Spanish (and German).

Møller Birger Lindberg Møller is Professor of Plant Biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen (Email: blm@plen.ku.dk, Phone: +45 2043 3411) and Distinguished Professor at the Carlsberg Laboratory. H-index: 72 and 402 publications registered in Web of Science. He is the Director of the Center for Synthetic Biology. His research focuses on the role of bio-active natural products in plant growth and development, resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses using key crop and medicinal plants as the experimental systems. Results from field studies e.g. of the Eremophila genus across the Australian continent are combined with studies at the single molecule level of the enzyme complexes involved. Key classes of natural products studied are cyanogenic glucosides and diterpenoids with focus on their synthesis, turn-over, storage, and role in plant insect and plant microbe interactions. In synthetic biology, his research group is focussed on the direct channeling of photosynthetic electron flow into light-driven synthesis of high-value products by engineering the assembly of all required enzymes in the chloroplast. Target molecules are structurally complex diterpenoids with interesting medicinal properties like forskolin, triptonide, ingenol-3-angelate, ginkgolides, serrulatanes and dimers of branched chain fatty acids. Pathways for biosynthesis and industrial production of vanillin and carmine in yeast have been developed. Birger Lindberg Møller is actively involved in collaboration with and mentoring of do-it-yourself communities and participates in debates on the opportunities, risks and ethics of synthetic biology in the written and electronic media. He is an elected member of the Royal Danish Academy of Science and Letters and member of the International Human Rights Network of Academic and Scholarly Societies, Washington. In 2007, he was awarded the VILLUM Kann Rasmussen Research Prize, the largest Danish research award (350.000 Euro). In 2013, he was awarded an ERC Advanced Grant and in 2015 an ERC PoC grant. His current research group is funded by grants from the Novo Nordisk Foundation and from the Carlsberg Foundation.

Retired Chief, Natural Products Branch, NIH/NCI David Newman retired as Chief of the Natural Products Branch (NPB) in the Developmental Therapeutics Program at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, Maryland in January 2015 having spent almost 24 years with the branch, the last 10 as Chief. Between 1956 and 1968 he spent 8 years in the UK agrichemical and photographic industries as a technician and then a graduate scientist, (ARIC by examination in 1960), interspersed with two two-year “sojourns” as a graduate student. M.Sc. organic chemistry University of Liverpool (1961-63); D.Phil. in microbial chemistry from the University of Sussex (1966-68). Moved to the USA in 1968 as a post-doc in the Biochemistry Department at the Univ.Georgia. In 1970, joined SK&F (biological chemist working mainly on anti-infective agents). 1977 MLS info. Sci. (Drexel University). SK&F then closed their antibiotic program in 1985. Following work in marine and microbial discovery programs at various companies for the next 6 years, joined the NCI’s NPB in 1991 responsible for marine and microbial collection programs, and their development as antitumor agents. Following Gordon Cragg’s retirement from the position of chief in Dec 2004, he was acting chief (2005) until appointed chief in 2006. Research interests are in natural product structures as drugs and leads thereto, together with their development as drugs, predominately in antimicrobial and antitumor areas. Author or coauthor of currently 239 publications mainly related to natural products and close chemical relatives, and holds 21 patents (UK, WIPO and USA) mainly on microbial products. He is a Chartered Chemist (CChem), Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), a Chartered Biologist (CBiol) and Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB) in the UK, and was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Pharmacognosy in 2014.

Jean-Luc Wolfender is Professor at the University of Geneva where he leads the phytochemistry bioactive natural product (PBNP) group. Since the 1990s he helped introduce LC-MS and LC-NMR for the profiling of natural extracts for dereplication for accelerating the discovery of novel bioactive compounds. He is currently developing innovative metabolomic approaches based on mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in various aspects of natural product research and includes LC-MS computational approaches for data mining with a focus on generic assessment natural extracts composition. His research focuses on the discovery of NP-based drugs and evidence-based phytotherapy, and also covers the search for new NP that can be induced in response to stimuli.

Olivier Potterat obtained a degree in Biology from the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) in 1985 and a PhD in Pharmacognosy/Phytochemistry with Prof. K. Hostettmann at the University of Lausanne in 1991. From 1991-1993, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow with Prof. H. Zähner (Microbiology) at the University of Tübingen (Germany). From 1993 to 1998, he was a Senior Researcher and then Assistant Professor at the Institute of Pharmacognosy, University of Lausanne. In 1998 he moved to the pharmaceutical company Böhringer-Ingelheim, where he was until 2005 in charge of the Natural Product Laboratory within the Lead Finding Department in Vienna (Austria) and later in Biberach/Riss (Germany). In April 2005, he joined the University of Basel (Switzerland) as a Senior Lecturer in the Division of Pharmaceutical Biology where he obtained his habilitation in 2009 and was appointed as a titular professor in 2018.
Olivier Potterat published 115research and review articles in peer reviewed journals, and is co-author of several book chapters and patent applications. From 2008 to 2015, he was Senior Editor of the international journal Chemistry and Biodiversity,and since 2016 he is Associate Editor ofPlantaMedica. In 2008 he received the SandozNaturaPhytotherapy Award. His research interests focus on natural product based lead discovery and the investigation of active constituents in herbal medicines.

Gabriele Costantino is a full professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Parma, where he has worked since 2007. He has held various academic and research positions, including visiting scientist roles in the USA, Spain, and Germany. He has received multiple awards, such as the Farmaindustria/SCI prize (2003), the Friederich Merz Fellowship (2004), the ‘Luigi Musajo’ medal (2022), and an honorary fellowship from the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry (2022). His research has led to significant developments, including the drug obeticholic acid (Ocaliva®) for primary biliary cirrhosis. Recently, he focuses on novel antibacterial agents and the study of African plant ingredients. He has numerous collaborations with universities in Rwanda and Burundi and co-led a Covid-19 project funded by the Rwandan government. Costantino has published over 210 scientific papers and has coordinated the INTEGRATE project under the H2020 framework. He served as Director and Dean of the Department of Food and Drugs at the University of Parma (2016- 2023) and held leadership roles in various scientific organizations. He co- founded B.Ethical srl, a company focused on sustainable bioprospecting and trade of natural active ingredients.

Catia Contado is an associate professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Ferrara, where she currently teaches analytical chemistry, analytical techniques for characterising nano- and micro-structured materials, and quality assurance for pharmaceutical industries. Her research interests include the development of analytical methods for the analysis of micro and nanomaterials of natural and industrial origin, contained in pharmaceutical, food and consumer products. Catia Contado carries out her research activity within the Department of Chemical, Pharmaceutical and Agricultural Sciences, where she also plays an active role in departmental policies, holding the role of Delegate for Internationalization and third Mission activities. She is also Erasmus coordinator for three different study programmes. She is also the representative for internationalization activities for the Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy and Prevention and coordinator of the Third Mission commission of the university. She earned the PhD in analytical and environmental chemistry at the University of Ferrara but she carried out her research at the Water Studies Centre of Monash University (Melbourne, AU) and at the Field Flow Fractionation Research Center of University of Utah (UT, USA). In 2006, as Fulbright Fellow, she worked at the Lerner Research Centre - Cleveland Clinic (OH, USA).

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Porto, Portugal Keynote Title: Anthocyanin pigments: inspiration from nature’s chemistry lab GROUPE POLYPHENOLS SPONSORED KEYNOTE SPEAKER Professor Victor Freitas graduated in Chemistry from the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP) in 1989. In 1995, he obtained his PhD in Biological and Medical Sciences in the University of Bordeaux II (France), specialization in Oenology. After his PhD, he returned to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (DQB) of FCUP where he has been developing his teaching and research activities. He is currently Full Professor in the University of Porto and member of the REQUIMTE-LAQV Research Centre where he has been developing an independent area of research involving polyphenol compounds. He has more than 370 original articles published in journals indexed in the Science Citation Index, several book chapters, numerous invited conferences, running multiple I&DT projects and several supervisions of Master and PhD students. He was President of Groupe Polyphenols from 2016 to 2021.

University of South Florida, Heart Institute, Department of Internal Medicine, University of South Florida, Tampa, USA. Research objective is to determine on how unresolved chronic Inflammation and immune responsive metabolic dysregulation contributes to ischemic and non-ischemic heart failure. Halade lab research focuses on : study of heart failure etiology with an integrative approach focusing on splenic leukocytes and heart; measurement of inflammatory mediators that impair cardiac repair and resolving lipid mediators that facilitate cardiac repair after heart attack; role of resolution receptor in inflammation-resolution processes in heart failure; and translate our findings for use in human therapy, considering risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, aging, and co-medications (oncological drugs).

Dr. Jamal OUAZZANI is a CNRS research director at Natural Product Chemistry Institute, ICSN. Dr. OUAZZANI have an interdisciplinary profile covering fundamental and applied microbiology, Biochemistry, analytical chemistry, scientific instrumentation design and implementation. Dr. J. OUAZZANI is the head of the Pilot-Unit of ICSN dedicated to the discovery of Bioactivenatural compounds from microorganisms. He participates to 4 European project and is the coordinator of the H2020 European project TASCMAR “Tools And Strategies to access to original bioactive compounds from Cultivation of MARine invertebrates and associated symbionts” (2015-2019). This project is funded with 7 M€ and includes 13 partners from 8 countries, among which 6 industrials. Dr. OUAZZANI developed worldwide collaborations and participated to numerous teaching cessions and field-collecting missions (La Reunion Island, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, North Africa …).Dr. OUAZZANI participated to numerous scientific advisory boards (International foundation of science IFS, Adebiotech ...) and acts as a consultant for chemical, cosmetic and environmental companies.

Prof. Chahrazade El Amri joined Pierre and Marie Curie University (now Sorbonne University, Paris) as an Assistant Professor in Biochemistry in 2005 and was promoted to Professor in 2015. From 2013 to 2024, she led the "Molecular and Functional Enzymology" group within the Biological Adaptation and Ageing Research Unit. She now serves as the team leader of the "Integrated Cellular Aging and Inflammation" group. Prof. El Amri has extensive expertise in protease enzymology and the development of drug-like candidates, holding four patents and co-founding the startup Regenaxis Therapeutics. Her research focuses on evaluating therapeutic molecules (including natural products) and mechanistic tools targeting human proteases implicated in various age-associated pathologies, including neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. With significant experience in multidisciplinary collaboration, she has worked extensively with medicinal chemists and managed numerous projects, particularly in the design and characterization of serine protease inhibitors, with a specific emphasis on kallikrein-related peptidases. In addition to her research, Prof. El Amri coordinates the Master's programs (Master 1 and Master 2) in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Chemistry-Biology Interfaces. She is a member of the European COST network PROTEOCURE and oversees the Sorbonne University–Pasteur Institute doctoral program.

Noureddine EL AOUAD, Professor of Organic Chemistry and Pharmacognosy at Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, University AbdelMalek Essaadi (Tetouan, Morocco) National Contact Point (NCP) Cluster "Health" for Horizon Europe Program in Morocco. Ph.D. on Natural Products Chemistry from the university Cadi Ayaad (Marrakech, Morrocco) and performed a post-doctoral fellowship and Principal Investigator in pharmacognosy at the University of Valencia in Spain (2002-2010). During this period he obtained a Master degree on rational use of drugs. Then he joined Medina Fondation (Center of excellence on natural products research in Granada, Spain, Merck Sharp & Dohme, MSD-USA in Spain) as a senior Scientist working on the use of microbial cultures as source of new bioactive molecules useful in anti-infective, anticancer therapies and in rare diseases. He joint Morocco in 2015 as a professor at University Ibn zohr Agadir and then at University Abdelmalek Essaadi- Tetouan at Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Tangier. His research interests are directed towards search for new high added value compounds from medicinal and aromatic plants, microorganisms, mushrooms, bee products and agriculture by-products. Currently he is working on development of new green methods of extraction, qualitative and quantitative analysis of active components in complex extracts of natural products with application in various fields such as pharmaceutical, food production and cosmeceutical. Pr. Anass KETTANI, born in Fes, Morocco, in 1961. He completed all his higher education in France, earning a Ph.D. from the University Paul Sabatier in Toulouse in Molecular Modeling of Proteins in 1992. Three post-doctoral years in Paris between 1992 and 1995 as a research associate at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the Atomic Energy Center (CEA) in Saclay. His postdoctoral research work was the subject of his State Doctorate from Mohamed V University of Rabat, defended in 1996. Since 1996, Anass KETTANI has been a Higher Education Professor at the Faculty of Sciences Ben M'Sik, teaching courses in Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, and Entrepreneurship, coordinating since 2010 the specialized Master's program in Biotechnology and Quality Approach that trains professionals to meet the needs of the agri-food and pharmaceutical industries. Between July 2019 and December 2022, Anass KETTANI held the position of Vice-President of Hassan II University of Casablanca, responsible for Integration, Entrepreneurship, and Partnership. A mission from January 2023 to February 2024 as Director R&D Innovation and Partnership within the Mohammed VI Center for Research and Innovation. Currently, Pr. Anass KETTANI is Director of the Integration and Entrepreneurship Center at Hassan II University in Casablanca.Since 2019, five cohorts have benefited from the National Student Entrepreneur Status (SNEE), bringing together a total of 2,152 students from the 18 institutions of the University, including faculties and engineering schools.

Dr. Ugo D’Amora is Senior Researcher at the Institute of Polymers, Composites and Biomaterials (IPCB) – National Research Council (CNR) in Italy. He achieved the national scientific qualification as Associate Professor in the Italian higher education system, for the disciplinary Materials science and technology (Academic Recruitment Field 09/D - Chemical and materials engineering, according to the national classification). In 2009, he graduated cum laude in Materials Engineering at the University of Naples "Federico II". In 2013, he achieved a PhD in Materials and Structures Engineering (Biomaterials) at the University of Naples "Federico II". He was Visiting Scientist at AO Research Institute Davos, Switzerland in 2015/2016 and Visiting Scientist at National Engineering Research Center for Biomaterials (NERCB), Sichuan University, Chengdu, China, in 2017/2018. In 2019, he spent several months in London at Queen Mary Innovation Ltd as well as in Shanghai at Shanghai Technology Innovation Center where he had the opportunity to enable new professional skills in terms of Technology Transfer systems such as IPs strategies and guidelines useful for academic researchers and start-up Companies. In the framework of a H2020-MSCA-RISE project, he also spent a period in Guangzhou, China at Medprin Regenerative Medical Technologies Co., Ltd, to approach a pilot study and scale-up of the achieved results on 3D printed biomaterials. Recently, he was Visiting Scientist at National Research Centre of Egypt – Cairo and at the Department of Cell & Molecular Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics, Medical University of South Carolina. He is member of European Society for biomaterials (ESB) and Italian Society for Biomaterials (SIB). During his career, he was awarded for the best poster presentation in 2012 at SIB congress and 2020 at WBC conference. Furthermore, in 2016 thanks to a Short-Term Mobility grant of CNR, he had the opportunity to complete his research at AO research Institute of Davos. In 2023, he was awarded with the Hot Paper Award for the paper entitled “Advanced application of collagen-based biomaterials in tissue repair and restoration”, in recognition of the exceptional creativity and contribution to Collagen and Leather. From 2014 to 2017, he was an adjunct professor of Materials Science and Technology at University of Naples "Federico II". He was nominated Work Package Leader of different European and national projects. Actually, he is responsible of a Bilateral Project CNR/CNRST (Morocco) entitled “Design of new injectable composite hydrogels loaded with Moroccan plants-derived bioactive molecules for neurodegenerative pathologies” and of a Bilateral Project CNR/SRNSFG (Georgia) entitled “BIOinspired Natural Polymer PATCHes with Embedded Amino Acids for Wound Healing-Related Metabolic Reprogramming – BioPatch”. His main research interests include material functionalization approaches, design of innovative bioinks for 3D bioprinting, development of injectable formulations as well as preparation and characterization of polymer and nanocomposite scaffolds for drug delivery and tissue engineering applications using conventional and additive manufacturing techniques. He serves as reviewer and guest editor of different high impact journals, he is currently author and co-author of national and international papers, book chapters and communications in international and national conferences.

Prof. Dr. ASAAD KHALID (Saudi Arabia) Prof. Asaad is an active researcher who has mentored 16 Ph.D. students and 10 M.Sc. students. He has published more than 130 research publications in leading international journals. Prof. Asaad has delivered more than 50 invited lectures in scientific meetings. He is currently in charge of a research group focused on drug discovery. His research on anti-malarial drug discovery was named one of Africa's bright ideas by the WHO in 2009. The research of Prof. Asaad focuses on drug discovery from medicinal plants. His target/cell-based research targets several tropical and neglected diseases including malaria, diabetes, tuberculosis, leishmaniases and trypanosomiasis. Prof. Asaad’s target-based drug discovery research utilizes enzyme inhibition methods to discover drug candidates that target particular enzyme-related disease mechanisms. MANASE Mahenina Jaovita né le 17 Juin 1984 à Antsirabe, Madagascar. J’ai réalisé mon apprentissage scolaire dans le Nord du pays dans la ville d’Antsiranana. En septembre 2004, je m’envole en France pour les études supérieuresdans la ville de Dijon à l’Université de Bourgogne (UB). Afin de valider mon premier cycle j’ai réalisé un stage dans le laboratoire de Pharmacognosie de la Faculté de Pharmacie de l’UB où je découvre les saponines. En février 2010,Ayant obtenu une bourse de mobilité internationale de la Région de Bourgogne, je reparspour l’Ile rouge en vue de réaliser mon stage de Master 2 à l’Institut Malgache de Recherche Appliquée où j’ai travaillé sur les endophytes de Solanumincanum. Ce séjour à Madagascar m’a permis d’obtenir une bourse de l’Etat Malgache pour mes études du troisième cycle. Ceci m’a permis d’Octobre 2010 en Décembre 2013 de réaliser ma thèse surles saponines de trois espèces de différentes Familles de Madagascar dans le même laboratoire de Pharmacognosie. Je rentre en 2015, et prend le poste de Maitre de conférence en 2017 à l’Université d’Antsiranana (UNA). Sana Alibi obtained her PhD in Biology from the Faculty of sciences of Bizerte (Tunisia), in 2017, in co-direction with the university of Cantabria (Spain). She is a professor of microbiology at the Faculty of Sciences, Gafsa– Tunisia since 2022 and a member of the Research Unit of Analysis and Process Applied to the Environment APAE- UR17ES32. She has received many many awards and appreciations from national and international organizations such as the AFFDU scholarship (Association française des femmes diplômées des universités) , the Young researchers encouragement program, etc… She is currently participating in two research projects funded by the AUF and the Canadian ministry of international relations and francophony. Currently, She is studying the emergence of multidrug resistant bacteria in clinical and environmental areas and the application of natural products such as essential oils and dermaseptins against these bacteria. She also focuses in the investigation of causes and the consequences of environmental pollution, particularly water by micro pollutants (plasticizers, pharmaceutical residues, endocrine disruptors, etc.) and the development of biological techniques for a correct analysis of water as well as the design of processes for the treatment and remediation. Prof. Zineb Rchiad is the Head Scientist and Lead of the Biosciences Platform at the UM6P CoreLab. She obtained her Ph.D. in 2016 from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), where she specialized in pathogen genomics. Following her doctoral studies, she joined the Cochin Institute to investigate the transcriptomic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying the transformation of B lymphocytes mediated by the apicomplexan parasite Theileria annulata and the role of novel tumour suppressor genes in human lymphoblastoma.Building on her expertise in apicomplexan biology, Prof. Rchiad further explored host-parasite interactions at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), focusing on Plasmodium falciparum and its effects on human brain cells. In 2020, she joined Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), and worked as an assistant professor of genomics at the faculty of medical sciences. Today, Prof. Rchiad spearheads research initiatives in precision medicineand genomic surveillance of pathogens and leads the Biosciences Platform of the UM6P Corelab.

Mounir Hassani Zerrouk is a full professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology in Tangier, where he also heads the Life Science department. With a PhD in Microbial and Food Technology from the University of Zaragoza, Pr Zerrouk boasts over 20 years of experience in laboratory research, leading and collaborating on multiple projects in his specialty. His research expertise encompasses biopolymer-based antimicrobial films, microbial behavior modeling, and the biological activities of aromatic plants, with over 20 peer-reviewed articles and an H-index of 14. Pr Zerrouk has supervised several PhD theses and continues to make significant contributions to the field of microbial and food technology.
